High potential and gifted education
At Leppington Public School, we are committed to identifying and nurturing high potential in every student. Our teachers use objective, valid and reliable formative assessment practices to recognise student strengths and learning needs across the intellectual, creative, physical and social-emotional domains.
We hold high expectations for all learners, recognising that students require differentiated and evidence-informed learning opportunities to optimise growth and achievement. Through intentional planning, quality teaching and targeted support, we ensure high potential, gifted and highly gifted students have access to learning that is appropriately challenging, engaging and responsive.
We value strong partnerships and work collaboratively with families, our school community and the wider community, alongside ongoing professional learning, to strengthen teacher capability and support talent development. Through these actions, Leppington PS is dedicated to creating opportunities that allow every student to thrive and achieve their best.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
High Potential and Gifted Education begins with high-quality teaching and learning in every classroom. At Leppington PS, teachers design learning that promotes challenge, curiosity and higher-order thinking, ensuring all students are supported to grow and achieve their best.
In our classrooms, students may experience:
Use of formative assessment and student data
Teachers regularly use diagnostic assessments, observations, check-ins and student self-reflection to identify strengths, interests and areas for growth. This information informs lesson planning and differentiation so students are consistently supported to progress.
Differentiated learning tasks and flexible grouping
Learning experiences are designed with multiple entry points and varying levels of complexity. Students may work independently, in pairs, or in flexible groups based on learning goals, interests and needs, ensuring appropriate challenge and opportunities for collaboration and leadership.
High expectations embedded in lesson planning
At Leppington PS, we maintain high expectations for every student. Teachers explicitly design learning goals that build deep understanding, promote creativity and develop problem-solving skills. Students are encouraged to set personal goals and reflect on progress, strengthening resilience, motivation and a growth mindset.
Student leadership and voice
Students are encouraged to contribute ideas, take leadership roles within learning experiences, and participate in goal setting and self-assessment. This promotes ownership, engagement and confidence, while strengthening communication and social-emotional skills.
Ongoing professional learning and collaborative practice
Teachers engage in ongoing professional learning and collaborative planning to strengthen HPGE practice across the school. Staff work together to share strategies and refine differentiation to ensure all students benefit from strong talent development practices.
At Leppington PS, HPGE is supported through a range of school-wide opportunities that foster enrichment, belonging and extension. These experiences allow students to explore interests, develop strengths and connect with others across the school community.
Special Interest Clubs
Our school-based Clubs program provides opportunities for students to connect, collaborate and extend their learning beyond the classroom in engaging and meaningful ways. Our current clubs include Koori Club, School Promotion Club, Technology Club, Dance Club, Choir Club and Gardening Club. However, each year, we introduce new clubs based on the strengths, expertise and interests of both our staff and students, ensuring a diverse and evolving range of enrichment opportunities that support high potential across the four domains.
Whole-School Enrichment & Extension Opportunities
At Leppington PS, HPGE is supported through a wide range of experiences that extend student skills, confidence and talent development beyond the classroom. These opportunities provide authentic ways for students to lead, collaborate, compete and challenge themselves across multiple domains.
Students may access opportunities such as:
- Interschool sport competitions
- Representative sport pathways
- Student Representative Council (SRC)
- Interschool Public speaking and debating
- Wellbeing programs that strengthen resilience, connection and social-emotional growth
- Curriculum-aligned excursions and incursions that deepen engagement and enhance learning through real-world experiences
These opportunities help students develop personal strengths, build leadership and wellbeing, and apply learning in meaningful and motivating ways.
Where appropriate, students are supported to access wider NSW opportunities including enrichment programs, extension pathways, and talent development experiences beyond our school setting. This includes offering student opportunities to participate in ICAS academic competitions, where students can challenge themselves and demonstrate skills across a range of learning areas.
Leppington PS also promotes and supports pathways such as Opportunity Class (OC) placement and Selective High School testing, working with students and families to raise awareness, encourage participation and support preparation where appropriate.
Creative Domain – Cross-School Collaboration
Leppington Public School proudly partners with local schools within the Camden Valley Way growth corridor to provide enriched HPGE Creative Domain opportunities for students.
Students in Years 3–6 who believe they demonstrate high potential in the performing arts are invited to self-nominate for specialised workshops. Formal training is not required, what matters most is student interest, confidence and creative potential.
In 2025, workshops included Modern Lyrical, Hip-hop/Jazz, Choral Singing and Musical Theatre, with students developing and rehearsing performances toward a shared showcase event that celebrates creativity and talent across participating schools. Be sure to watch our performance stories.
